First Session of Block Lectures at the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje held by Prof. Juergen Blaser PhD from the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences in Bern

The first session of block lectures at the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje by Prof. Juergen Blaser PhD from the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences of the Bern University of Applied Sciences from Switzerland took place in the period from 23 to 30 April 2014 as part of the established cooperation between the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje and the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences from Switzerland. On 23 and 24 April 2014, block lectures took place at the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje covering the topic of “Integrated Forest Management and Climate Change”. The lectures provoked great interest and were attended by more than 95 students, professors of the Faculty of Forestry, as well as representatives of the relevant institutions working in this field: the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, the Public Enterprise “Parkovi i zelenilo” – Skopje, Goce Delchev University of Shtip and the Public Enterprise “Makedonski shumi”.

 

With the purpose of better understanding the curricula of the two faculties, a workshop was organised on 25 April 2014 at the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje which was attended by more than 12 professors from the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje, Prof. Juergen Blaser PhD and representatives of the Programme Coordination Team of the Nature Conservation Programme in Macedonia. The objective of the workshop was to compare curricula of the two faculties and to discuss potential improvements to the curriculum of the Faculty of Forestry, especially to the part referring to increased coverage of biodiversity in the courses of the Faculty.

On 29 and 30 April 2014, the Nature Conservation Programme in Macedonia organised field teaching for a group of 30 students from the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje who had the opportunity to get familiar with the current state of the forests in the Malesh Mountains, the challenges of forest management in that region and adressing climate change.  The field teaching included presentations by the professors Nikolcho Velkovski, Nikola Nikolov and Eftim Brndevski from the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje, representatives of the “Maleshevo” subsidiary of “Makedonski shumi” from Berovo and the professor Juergen Blaser from the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences from Switzerland.

The activities were carried out as part of the intervention for cooperation between the Faculty of Forestry in Skopje and the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences of the Bern University of Applied Sciences from Switzerland within the Nature Conservation Programme in Macedonia.
