The project “The Woodpecker’s Trail” of the Macedonian Ecological Society was initiated in October 2015 and will be implemented until April 2016. The objective of the project is to promote the values of the old beech forests, to educate the public and to raise the awareness about their importance. The main idea is the public better to understand the concept of sustainable management of beech forests.
Activities implemented until now:
- Macedonian Ecological Society works on improving and modifying the already existing trail in the beech forest at the locality of Ponikva, by adjusting the trail to new plans in the municipalities of Probishtip and Kochani for construction of an urban weekend settlement on part of the trail. The Society also works on marking educational points along the trail as well as on providing information at those points and setting up informational boards at the beginning of the trail.
Ongoing is the development of the Guide for the Woodpecker’s Trail which besides guidance on how to carry out educational activities along the trail, contains proposals for various games and tasks for children, through which they can better understand the value of beech forests. Two workshops for teachers and other stakeholders from the region are also planned in order to strengthen their capacities so they can recognize and conserve biodiversity, as well as a public event is planned to be organized at the end of the project in order to promote the trail.
