Afforestation with riparian tree species
On 13 December, near the village of Sofilari, on the territory of the Shtip Municipality, and as part of the Nature Conservation Programme in North Macedonia – NCP, the PE National Forests in cooperation with the Macedonian Ecological Society and Farmahem as the national coordinator of NCP, carried out an action for afforestation with 500 seedlings of white poplar and white willow on an area of around 2 ha, under the management of the public enterprise. The aim of the afforestation is to restore and repair part of the riparian forest belt along Bregalnica River.
The activity for production of riparian seedlings, which is a part of the programme component for restoring the forests along the Bregalnica River in order to improve the fundamental functions for protection against erosion and flooding of surrounding areas, is something new in the seedling production of the public enterprise, which is involved as a partner in the NCP implementation. In the last four years, PE National Forests in cooperation with the Macedonian Ecological Society has strengthened its capacities for this type of production, which is a pioneering activity in the region.
In 2021 more than 1000 seedlings of these riparian species were produced in the PE National Forests nurseries in Kavadarci and Delchevo. These seedlings will be planted along the Bregalnica River and in other deteriorated parts of riparian belts in the Bregalnica basin.
