Role of social media in environmental protection

Social media and their use are on the rise and they become the main channel for internet communication. Millions of articles, photos and videos are published every day, while the number of news items is constantly increasing. Social media have an important role in the lives of millions of people worldwide and they are constantly used for a variety of purposes in all spheres.

In recent years social media are increasingly used as a tool for promotion of protection of the environment and biodiversity. Social media give us insight into people’s attitude towards nature. All those who want to spend time outdoors often carry a camera with them or use their smart phones and instantly upload their photos on social media. Only on Instagram there are millions of photos from all important nature reserves, endangered species and regions.

The rise of social media also resulted in greater concerns for the state of nature globally. All media, including social media, contribute to raising awareness about the issues in nature and give us guidance on how individuals can help.

The active use of social media can enhance the work focused on solving issues in nature as well as increase the quantity of information that reach the citizens. This is particularly important from the aspect of funding and supporting projects for the environment.

The Nature Conservation Programme in Macedonia follows this global trend in the fight for environmental protection and shares its activities on social media, educates the population and brings the natural beauty of the Bregalnica basin closer to the people.
