Third visit of Joseph Rickman from the International Rice Research Institute
The pilot project for sustainable rice production implemented as part of the Nature Conservation Programme in Macedonia enters its final stage for this year. In the period from 22 to 25 September 2015, Mr. Joseph Rickman – rise expert from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) – visited the Nature Conservation Programme in Macedonia and the experimental rice fields for the third time. During his mission, he had an opportunity to visit the experimental rice fields in the village of Tarinci, as well as to meet some farmers – rice producers and to discuss with them about the yield and the methods and measures applied in traditional rice cultivation.
Together with representatives of the Public Enterprise “Makedonski Shumi”, members of the Nature Conservation Programme and individual farmers they discussed ideas about the next steps that should be taken towards sustainable rice production with lower impact on biological diversity and reducing the amount of water used currently for rice production.
